Descriptive Research

Descriptive research is defined as a research method that describes the characteristics of the population or phenomenon that is being studied. This methodology Focus more or the “what” of the research subject rather than the “why” of the research subject”

Characteristics of Descriptive Research

  • Quantitative research

  • Uncontrollable variables

  • Cross-sectional studies

  • Basis for further studies

 Use of Descriptive Research

  • To measure data trend

  • To compare variable

  • Conduct comparison

  • To define the characteristics of subject

Methods of Descriptive Research

Survey method

A survey is defined as a brief interview or discussion with individuals about a specific topic. survey research is often used to aces thoughts, opinions, and feelings. Survey research often used to assess thought, opinion, and feelings. Survey research can be specific and limited. Or it can have more global, widespread goals. A survey consists of a predetermined set of questions that is given to a sample. With a representative sample. That is, one that is representative of the larger population of interest. One can describe the attitudes of the population from which the sample was drawn.

Case study

Case studies are analyses of persons, events, decision, periods, projects, or other system that are studied historically by one or method. The case that is the subject of the enquiry will be an instance of a class of phenomena that provides an analytical frame-an object-within which the study is conducted and which the case illuminates and explicates.

Characteristics of an effective survey and case study

Survey method

Case study

  • Measurable survey objectives

  • Builds a good story

  • Sound research design

  • Involves interesting characters

  • Effective survey question design

  • Uses realistic scenarios

  • Sound sampling strategy. when needed

  • Makes corporates learners think critically

  • Effective survey response strategy

  • Applies knowledge of the online training course

  • Meaningful data summary

  • Actively engages corporate learners

  • Effective data display and reporting

  • Utilizes branching scenarios

Advantages Of Descriptive Research

  • Diverse data collection method

  • Provides through information

  • Provide high quality data

  • Quick to perform and cheap

  • Forms the basis for decision making

  • The opportunity to integrate the qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection

Disadvantages Of Descriptive Research

  • Descriptive studies cannot test or verify the research problems statistically.

  • Research result may reflect certain level bias due to the absence of statistical tests

  • The majority of descriptive studies are not ‘repeatable’ due to their observational nature

  • Descriptive studies are not helpful in identifying cause behind described phenomenon
